The Birth of John

The need for the Messiah to come is not questioned and the necessity for all the preparation and miraculous details for His birth to take place cannot be argued. For the purpose of the baby born and wrapped in swaddling clothes was for the salvation of the world. This being said, the birth of Jesus was not the only miraculous birth taking place at this time. The birth of John, Jesus’ cousin, was just as miraculous and wonderful. It was just as much the work of the Holy Spirit and purposeful as the pregnancy of Mary. What was the purpose of John’s birth? The Gospel of John tells us “He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him.” (John 1:7). John’s birth to Zechariah and Elizabeth provided a forerunner for the birth of the Messiah, a witness to the Messiah’s identity and message so that through his witness all would believe in the True Messiah. What a purpose to live out! Let us all strive for this purpose. None of us are the Messiah, the Savior of the world, but some of us will strive to live in such a way that bears witness to the one who is, Jesus Christ the baby born in Bethlehem. I pray John’s birth and purpose challenge us all to understand our purpose in light of his.  -Pastor Andrew
